Continuing Support and Development on iX and Trilogy

Varian Medical Systems is fully committed to the support and development of the Clinac® series of linear accelerators. There are a number of new capabilities on our Product Roadmap in the next few years, including the introduction of High Intensity Mode for iX and Trilogy. The iX and Trilogy remain established platforms for advanced radiotherapy. They stand ready to be upgraded and augmented as new technologies become available and your practice grows.

Machine Configuration for Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) On Varian Manufactured Linear Accelerators

VMAT is an advanced form of rotational intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) that has the potential to make treatments much faster and more comfortable for patients than traditional radiotherapy, while simultaneously reducing the dose delivered to healthy tissue. VMAT is made possible by software innovations that may be used with Varian manufactured treatment technology. VMAT consists of two components: (1) treatment planning, and (2) treatment delivery. Although Varian offers a VMAT solution that includes both treatment planning and treatment delivery components, other manufacturers may offer VMAT treatment planning products without a treatment delivery component. Varian provides detailed information about its products to other VMAT manufacturers for their development of VMAT treatment planning solutions that work with Varian’s treatment delivery products.

Whenever a VMAT treatment is to be delivered on a Varian manufactured linear accelerator it is important to confirm that you have the correct Varian machine and product configuration to perform VMAT. Varian has only verified and validated the following configuration for VMAT treatment delivery on a Varian manufactured linear accelerator:

  • Varian linear accelerator C-Series, versions 7.8, 7.9 or 7.10
  • 4DITC, versions 8.3, 8.6 or 8.8
  • On Board Imager (OBI), versions 1.4 or 1.5
  • Millennium MLC-120 or HD120™ multi-leaf collimator, Dynamic MLC with versions 6.8, 7.1, or 7.2
  • Varian VMAT ("VVMAT") upgrade

Because Varian has not verified or validated any other configuration, Varian makes no representation of any kind that other configurations involving Varian manufactured linear accelerators are safe or effective for VMAT use. Varian strongly advises users to ensure that they have the configuration of products listed above before they perform VMAT treatments on Varian linear accelerators. If you have any question about whether your Varian products match the tested configuration listed above, please contact your local Varian Service manager.

Please note that Varian may verify and validate other linear accelerator configurations for use with VMAT in the future, at which time it will update this information statement.
